Prof. K.V. Jayakumar, who has taken over as the Executive Director of CWRDM was working as Professor & Head, Department of Civil Engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Warangal. He had his early education at Coonoor and Ooty in The Nilgiris District of Tamilnadu and obtained his B.Tech degree in Civil Engineering from the Karnataka Regional Engineering College, Surathkal (now National Institute of Technology Karnataka). Later he obtained his M.Tech degree specializing in Water Resources Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur from where he also obtained his Ph.D. degree. He had research and teaching experience at KREC Surathkal, Centre for Water Resources, Anna University, Chennai and IIT Kanpur. He has been with the Department of Civil Engineering at NIT Warangal since 1993, where he had various academic and administrative responsibilities.
Prof. Jayakumar is a widely traveled academician, both within and outside the country. He had visited many countries including USA, Germany, The Netherlands, Australia, France, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Tanzania, UAE etc., to present papers, to involve in research discussion as well as on teaching assignments. He was awarded the UNESCO fellowship to participate in the IV International Course on Urban Drainage in Developing Countries (UDDC) at the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok during the year 1992. The V International Course on UDDC was organized at Warangal during the year 1996 and a follow up course for Indian Engineers and academicians in the year 2001. Both these courses were coordinated jointly by Prof. Jayakumar and Prof. Wolfgang F. Geiger of the University of Essen, Germany. The resource persons for these courses included internationally reputed researchers like Dr. Jiri Marsalek of NWRI Canada, Dr. Larry S Roesner of Colorado State University at Boulder, USA, Prof. S.Ramaseshan of IIT Kanpur etc.
Prof. Jayakumar has expertise in Water Resources Engineering, Urban Hydrology and Stormwater Management, Land and Water Management, Environmental Engineering and Science, Constructed Wetlands, Irrigation scheduling, Computational Methods, Remote Sensing and GIS. He has guided 4 Ph.D. theses, 50 M.Tech dissertations and a number of B.Tech projects at NIT Warangal. He has over 50 publications in international/national journals and conferences. He was a member of various committees of Government of Andhra Pradesh and was honoured by the Government of Andhra Pradesh in the year 2001 for his contribution to community development, especially in the area of urban drainage. He was the recipient of the International Visiting Fellowship of the Environment and Water Research Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineering during the year 2003. He is also on the Editorial Board of Sri Lankan Society of Agricultural Engineering. He was also the Coordinator for Identifying villages which are not covered by safe drinking water in Andhra Pradesh under the Rajiv Gandhi Drinking Water Mission.
